Reusable shipping boxes for lab sample shipping
Environmental analysis labs
Between the sampler in the field and the analytical lab there is a constant loop: water, soil and air samples go to the lab, the sample container comes back empty and cleaned.
With reusable shipping boxes from hey circle this two-way route becomes a closed loop - without piles of cardboard, and with better protection for time-critical samples.
Box L compared with a single-use cardboard box of the same size containing 80 % recycled material, calculated over 50 cycles. Data source: Ökopol life cycle assessment. The 53 % are an average from real customer calculations.
How the loop works
You send the sample to the lab in the hey circle box. After the analysis the container goes back to the sampler empty or cleaned - ready for the next job. A box lasts around 50 cycles on average.
Because the container comes back empty, you plan the return leg in bulk: collect several folded boxes and send them back together, which keeps parcel postage low.
-
Pack & close
- Pack the sample container padded and secure inside the hey circle box
- Close the box with the zip or the lift-off lid - no tape at all
- Security seal for the clear, tamper-evident allocation of sensitive samples
-
Ship
- Stick the shipping label onto the label holder and send the sample to the lab with your usual parcel carrier
- Tested and approved by all parcel carriers, shipped without surcharge
- Dimensionally stable boxes with padding protect time-critical samples in transit - tested with up to 400 kg stacking pressure and in a drop test from 80 cm
-
Return
- After the analysis the container goes back to the sampler empty or cleaned - the return leg is part of the process, not optional
- Collect several folded boxes and send them back in bulk, which keeps parcel postage low
- Fold the box flat or refill it right away - no cardboard or filling material waste
Environmental analysis labs & reusables: a dream team
-
A genuine two-way loop
Unlike a pure one-way shipment, the sample container has to go back to the sampler anyway. That is exactly what a reusable system is built for - the return leg is planned in, not an extra problem.
-
Sensitive samples
Environmental samples often have only a limited analysis window, and the container has to arrive undamaged. Dimensionally stable boxes with padding protect better than yet another cardboard box - tested with up to 400 kg stacking pressure and in a drop test from 80 cm.
-
Temperature-controlled shipments
The classic hey circle lab case is exactly that - a high-value, temperature-controlled reusable sample carrier travelling back and forth between sender and lab. Which specific solution suits your cold chain requirement is something we work out in conversation rather than with blanket promises.
-
Packaging costs
With a dense regional network, single-use containers add up fast. According to the Ökopol life cycle assessment (2023), the hey circle Box L saves 94 % packaging waste and 76 % CO2 over 50 cycles compared with a single-use cardboard box of the same size containing 80 % recycled material. Packaging costs fall by 53 % on average, based on real customer calculations.
-
Regulation
The PPWR has applied since 12 August 2026. From 2030 it sets reuse targets for certain transport packaging such as plastic crates and pallets; boxes made of cardboard or paperboard are exempt. Whether your shipping is affected depends on format and supply relationship - we are happy to check this with you. Setting up the loop now means you gain experience before customers or regulators ask for it.

Frequently asked questions
How does the sample container come back?
Empty or cleaned, folded flat, collected and sent back to the sampler in bundles - that keeps parcel postage low.
Are the boxes suitable for cold chain transport?
The classic hey circle lab case is a temperature-controlled reusable box that shuttles between the sender and the lab. We clarify the specification your particular analysis parameters need individually in a consultation - we deliberately do not promise a blanket cooling performance.
What about sample integrity and traceability?
Security seals ensure unambiguous allocation, and the IT system with its GRAI code documents every cycle.
Is it worth it for a single regional lab?
What matters is frequency, not size: if the same samplers work with your lab network on a regular basis, you benefit from the first loop onwards.
How long does a hey circle shipping box or bag last?
Our reusable hey circle shipping packaging lasts an average of 50 cycles, so one reusable packaging replaces 50 single-use packages. The service life varies by product type and is stated in the respective product information.
We continuously test this service life with ping-pong shipping through various parcel carriers.
We keep developing our products further to increase their service life.
How can you save with reusables?
Our team will be happy to advise you on the benefits of reusable shipping packaging for your shipping loop.
