Reusable packaging for occupational safety and PPE

Occupational safety and PPE

In occupational safety, two streams run side by side. One is ongoing replenishment: gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection and workwear go out regularly to the same sites. The other is the inspection loop: fall protection PPE has to be inspected once a year and is sent in for that purpose.

Both streams run through the parcel network, and today both end up in cardboard. The inspection loop is the easier place to start - there the return leg is already built.

So funktioniert der Kreislauf

In the inspection loop, the site sends its equipment in inside the reusable box, the service provider inspects it and sends it back in the very same box. Out and back, without a cardboard box being created anywhere - and the appointment comes round again every year.

In the replenishment business, the distributor delivers to its regular customers in reusable boxes; the boxes are folded flat, collected and sent back in bulk. Large fall arresters and rescue equipment for working at height are too bulky for a box and stay on their current route.

  • Packen & verschließen

    • Pick the replenishment order or pack up the items due for inspection
    • Place them in the matching box or bag size, no void fill needed
    • Close it tamper-proof all round
  • Versenden

    • Slide the shipping label into the label holder - for the return leg, simply turn it round
    • Hand over to DHL, DPD, UPS or GLS as before, with no surcharge
    • Conveyable in the normal sorting process at the parcel hubs
  • Zurücksenden

    • Inspection items: the inspected equipment goes back to the site in the same box
    • Replenishment: fold the boxes flat, collect them and send them back in one bundle
    • Ready for use again as soon as it comes back - for an average of 50 cycles
  • The return leg already exists

In the inspection loop, nobody has to be persuaded to send something back - it happens anyway. All that is missing is packaging that survives both legs. And the appointment repeats every year, so it can be planned.

  • Savings three times over

Reuse avoids up to 94 % of waste and 76 % of CO2 emissions, and packaging costs fall by an average of 53 %. In the inspection loop every box counts twice, because it covers both legs in a single operation.

  • Two streams, one fleet

If you do both, distribution and inspection, you can use the same boxes for both. The inspection loop supplies the predictable return leg, the replenishment business supplies the volume - together they keep the fleet utilised.

  • Credible on the subject

Occupational safety sells care and responsibility. Packaging that runs 50 times instead of once fits that stance - and with the GRAI code you can back it up with figures rather than just claim it.

  • Regulation

With the PPWR, reuse turns from a nice-to-have into a requirement. Build the loop now and you will have it running smoothly before the quotas take effect.

Häufige Fragen

Can I get inspected equipment back in the same box?

Yes, that is exactly the point. Your equipment travels to the inspection provider in the reusable box and comes back in the same box. For the return leg you simply turn the label around in the label holder - nothing to stick on, no residue.

Do fall arresters fit in the reusable box?

No. Large fall arresters and rescue devices are too heavy and too bulky and stay on their existing route. The box covers the rest of the inspection and resupply flow: hearing protection, safety glasses, gloves, helmets and other personal protective equipment in parcel format.

How often does a box run through the inspection loop?

The recurring inspection is usually annual - on its own that does not create a high frequency. The frequency comes from the resupply business with the same customers. That is why combining both flows pays off: inspection items and resupply run through the same boxes, 50 cycles on average.
